Paradoxical hyperbole, or describing something metaphorically as two extreme and mutually exclusive things ("I sense fire in my frozen veins") is today, a well-known technique for expressing grand romantic sentiments. This concert enjoys the extreme heights and depths of romantic poetry through the eyes of great composers and includes Liszt's interpretations of three sonnets by the medieval poet Petrarch, whose sonnets are the earliest known examples of this poetic technique.
